Syagrus kellyana (or really any of the “quarter coconuts” etc) and Butia odorata. Something quirky that should make it through 8b winters!

Edited by CodyORB
Kellyana is the quarter coconut not schizohphylla

Yeah, this would be interesting, B. archeri X Queen, would it make mini mule?

Ha, it might turn out like the fun-sounding Phoenix canariensis x roebellenii^_^ I'd like one

I really love this palm, and just put mine in the ground I got from Patrick S. earlier this year. It was a severely overgrown plant in a 5 gallon. So much so that there was barely any soil left in the root ball, just a mass of roots. Will post pics soon.

This is becoming a reality, with Rich Lindberg here in Jacksonville about to put Queen pollen on his flowering Archeri.  He's posted pics in the FB hybrid palms group.

He's also pollinated B. Mattogrossensis with queen and a handful of seeds are developing from that one

Syagrus camplyospatha x Butia eriospatha, because, anything might happen. I have flowering S. camplyospatha if a competent hybridizer wants to try to make this happen.

I know Rich did some Campylospatha x romanzoffiana, and now he's letting the Campylospatha self pollinate each other.  Texas is a bit far for me...

Excellent, I look forward to seeing the offspring, in a few years

My ideal mule palm would be butia witeckii x a cold hardy romanzoffiana.  The pic below could be the mother (if I talk to the hotel owner).  I also have some baby Uruguay queens whose momma survived some cold spells in Georgia.  That way I could get extra hardiness plus weepy leaflets.  A nicer hardier version of howea.

God bless America...

and everywhere else too.

Jubaea x lytocaryum

deep green leaflets

no recurving fronds

medium trunk

weeping leaflets in a flat plane

I’m sure it can be done, I just don’t have the palms or the expertise to do it

Sorry, its a B. eriospatha x S. ruschiana ( not a S. rupicola)

Not too much to see yet, only a few blades of grass.

Would you have any viable  seeds of this cross B. eriospatha x S. ruschiana?

thanks.

Shipping from Brazil is reportedly extremely challenging, and Alberto hasn’t been on PT for over a year.

Syagrus romanzoffiana var. litoralis x  Butia eriospatha is what I'm wanting in the future, the most cold hardiest mule palm. Also would try to grow a parrot mule one day.

Trade your car for an F150.

Then drive to Homestead whenever you get the itch.

Steering back to the topic....

Syagrus sancona or coronata, something plumose, crossed with a very silvery blue odorata

The silver fox mule

Update. After three years of in-ground growth. Syagrus weddeliana x Butia odorata. One of my fastest palms, keeping a close pace with my Queens. This started as a scraggly overgrown five gallon a few feet tall, summer of ‘21. Prevailing winds pushing the fronds this way.

Beautiful palm. What cold tolerance does it have?  Where I live in the Santa Ynez River it regularly ( most winters ) gets into the low twenties so it limits choices. Always looking for something hardy. Looks worth planting with some winter protection during freezes.

Hard to say, never been tested beyond upper 20’s which doesn’t phase it. If I had to estimate given its parentage I’d say maybe about 20F.
