Even the "plain Jane" Edulis can have really beautiful crownshaft color. I saw one in Huntington Beach that was a deep green, almost a forest green. It looked great!

i'm pretty much torturing my all E.edulis. they're 1gal plants were in 1/2 day summer sun and full summer sun, i think 3 or 4 in each spot, even now in the winter they're moved in the same amount of sun so they can stay used to it but they're doing okay still and it's been about a year since i've had them. they are large 1gal plants though but i can't comment on the color since they're either slightly burnt or everything's a palish yellow green from so much sun exposure
From another thread. The fourth picture reminds me of the Edulis I mentioned. http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/44102-euterpe-oleracea-in-peradeniya-botanic-garden/#entry678408

Bill, your palms grow at lightning speed :greenthumb:

Kenny, the below edulis was "very green" till the last few months, your will colour very much esp if planted in full sun and in good time.

Phil told me to keep soil more on the dry side while indoors for the winter but is sure seems to go dry fast so I've had to keep it more on the moist side, so hope it still does well until spring and I can get it outside.

so here's the 5 month update from when i started this topic ......

when i first started this topic the palm was in pretty heavy shade in a small corner where it was pretty much just ignored. i've been moving it around so it gets more and more sun and now it's right next to a Howea where it gets some scattered direct sunlight. the Euterpe edulis v.orange crowhshaft is still pushing that same spear shown in the original photos posted 5mo ago BUT look at the color difference. that extra bit of sun really brought out the colors real quick. the palm breezed through it's 2nd winter without a hitch and is handling a good amount of sun real well

Great update. It's nice when all of us can breathe a sigh of relief after winters over no matter where we live.

My first two here at the yard are not growing to my expectations, but the one at the nursery which gets lots of sun is really performing well. They really like some strong hours of sun!

I would really love to see a picture...

For that matter, it doesn't have to be Jeff--anyone in South Florida growing Euterpe I would love to see; I have seen a couple of species at Mike's place, but his place is not the norm--just because you see David Blaine do something, doesn't mean you can duplicate it...

the last 2 winters have been super mild so i'm not sure how cold hardy these really are. i don't have a weather station at my yard but the closest weather stations recorded a low of around 38-39° this past winter and that was only for 2 nights, all other recorded data were at or over 40°. this palm did see alot of wind as it was placed out in the open in the windiest part of my property and was out in the open

i was almost going to plant it in a sheltered spot where it will get more a couple hours of filtered sun and then shade by noon but after reading Pedro and MattyB's suggestions i'm going to spend a little more time acclimating it to more sun and plant it in a full sun location. i'm usually not the most patient when it comes to acclimating (i'll take some photos of the yard in the upcoming weeks) but some species aren't as easily replaceable and i know i need to be more patient with this guy.

I'm not sure if this is E. edulis or oleracea? Whichever it is, they are tall, fast and graceful palms.

No picture, but I do enjoy it everyday while at work. Anyone that comes by during this weekend Extravaganza Sale can certainly see it for themselves.

I had upper 30's a few weeks back for an early morning low and no damage what so ever.

- Here is the Euterpe sp. 'Orange Crownshaft' Jeff had mentioned in his post above. It was photographed during the second weekend of the Extravaganza. It gets a great deal of sun and seems to love it in this spot near one of the shadehouses.

- The one shown above planted in the landscape, is from the same group as the 10 gal. specimens in the shadehouse. This was the one pulled for sale.

- There was also a 7 gal., representing the next generation. It is a great palm with a lot of potential.

Just walked by this one a few minutes ago, and this topic convinced me to add to the photos. It is in full sun, and is getting more colorful as it ages. I was worried for a while that it wouldn't live up to its name.

It is even retaining a bit of interesting color on the developing trunk.

A fast grower. I wish I had more.

Alive too--how long has it been in the ground? Was this the first one planted or did it take a few attempts? Looks like it doesn't hold as much color in the ground, but I am impressed, nonetheless!

Adding to an old thread.

I just moved mine from one location (too close to our banana grove) to another. It has only two fronds and is a small seedling. Hoping it survives. I used seaweed extract, my secret for any of my plantings, especially transplants. Hoping to check in on everyone else’s!

Mine from FB last august is starting to grow a new frond after a horrid start.  Not grown in Florida much due to their temper here, so its an experiment with one frond and a stunted wanna be and now a spear. Not photo worthy lol.
