This palm looks like Dypsis cabadae (see attached photo) although I do not see any suckers which is normal on this clumping palm. Is it possible there is another palm that is similar to the Cabada palm or have the suckers just been removed?

Any help clarifying the identification would be much appreciated.

Great - thanks for comfirming. They are such beautiful palms.

Many cabadae are planted from single seed too. Most lutesens are planted from multiple seeds. They may indeed get clumpy at the same rate! :)

Yep! Plant some single seeds of lutesens and see if you don't get one that is even single trunk as seen here from time to time. Same with cabadae and there also seems to be environmental conditions that determine amount of clumpiness. (I made that word up evidently) :innocent:

It looks like it's in a city planting which is maybe why they picked this palm for the more thinned out, cleaner look. In the landscape, this would not be the look that most people would want.

Woah!

JustSayin, because up here in Brandon my cabadae does nothing for suckers, while the ever-clumping lutescens goes crazy.... Ive gotta whack the suckers twice a year in order to keep my "triple" trunkd look...

In fact, my cabadae hasnt suckerd once since Ive gotten it 3 or 4 years ago...

Even the topic starter may clump some more as time goes by especially if it gets good care and lots of light.

Ray, your lute may be from multiple seeds as most are.

i'm trying to keep my lutescens to about 5 trunks but it's real tough, i'll try and break a sucker off and it comes right back, i have 3 little 1 leaf suckers that came back from the dead even when using glue to seal it off. i even got a split where there's no way to really break it off with out possibily damaging the other trunk

I dunno...

Now that I look at it more, those crownshafts look skinnier than mine, yet the plants actually bigger than mine, with more wood trunk...

Hmmm

The palm in the photo is a city planting. I have Cabada at home that have many suckers but want them to look more like these 'triples' - that's why I was wondering if it was something other than Cabada or just thinned out Cabada with suckers removed. Thanks for all the response.

Your cabadae may have had more "seedlings" init when it first started as a potted up plant...

I have grown hundreds of cabadae and the rate of clumping changes mostly depending on the sun available here. None of my shade is up very high so once the first trunk or two emerge into the sun they send up more trunks. In taller shade the first stems keep growing fast and the development of lower sprouts if limited or absent.

The triple on the street shows some scaring on the two smaller trunks at the base. The smallest trunk is well offset from the others. I don't know what happened but it looks unnatural.
