Looking closely today I notice this cool looking Calamus sp has no flagellum ( the long thorny whip extension) so not sure where to plant this Palm now :)

Anyone growing a Calamus sp "without"the flagellum ?

Pete :)

That's still pretty small. How do you know it won't develop flagellum when it gets a bit larger like some of the others do?

Zig, its not that small, the tiles are 400mm, Ive only had caryotoides and that has flagellum when tiny, this sp is from Thailand and after browsing Hodels awesome Palms n cycads of Thailand quite a few Calamus have no flagellum. This is an offshoot from it parent so and I will have to await info from the "seller" at the next markets where I bought it last year.

I love Calamus, in a previous garden I had all of the Australian species growing including Calamus vitiensis and Calamus warburgii (both of which have cirri instead of flagellum)......... Would love to start collecting them again.
