Nothing quite like a healthy coconut grove. These pics are from my favorite grove at Whittington Beach Park in Ka'u on the Big Island.

The trees are off of the public activity areas and thus don't have the "feather duster" pruned appearance you see so often elsewhere.

Ka'u is a lightly populated area in the southernmost part of the Big Island, so you can enjoy this grove in peace and quiet.

Climate here is probably mesic, meaning drought stress is sometimes a possiblity, but these guys seem happy as can be.

Down the road, at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, you can watch the honu (green sea turtles) at the beach, then you turn around and there is this bucolic pond filled with water lilies and water hyacinths (yeah, they're weeds, but they are pretty!) and framed by beautiful coconuts and sea almond trees. There's a few ducks hanging around too, the kind that know that all humans have snacks to share.
