So, I got this thing kind of small. For the first few years, I laughed saying if it exceeded my height before I died I would be happy. Interestingly it seems to like these recent cold winters and has started to speed up. It does, slightly, exceed my height going into spring 2015.

And can't tell as well from picture, but it is a really cool color.

The JXB is from P.S. He would know any details about this palm. I got it from PalmsRGreat when he lived in Houston.

I got mine from the same source then. So, this is what to expect!

I believe it will do better for you as it tends to sulk in our hot summers.

Dang hot here...during the day...maybe the cool nights will do the trick though

Oh trust me, I know you get hot, but it is hot a lot longer here, months on end, day and night, with humidity to go with it.

Ben, since it's a hybrid there could be some variation. With hybrids there is no guarantee that two palms will look alike.

Keith: Not sure where that is from, but looks a few degrees on the low side vs. what Wunderground says for me. But thank God we don't have the night heat and humidity...for sure you guys have it worse. Ugh we might have to turn the AC on this weekend for the first time!

Josh: I know. But it's a pretty good barometer given the source and likely parentage of both palms.

How unusual.. the variability is what will get me.... Just fascinating watching it unfold. They are very attractive palms at all stages of their growth.

Makes me think of a fiddlehead in a unique way.

Awesome palm Keith

Very nice Keith! I had another one same age that died on me last year. I negelected to do anything for it out in the ice storm last year and it finally got zapped. It had been through a tough life....glad to see how it would have looked. I have some small ones but will take me a long time to get that size.

For a little fun, to the left is the yatay Mule, to the right the Jubutia. Same age. Photo taken today.

Wow, the mule grows THAT much faster than a jubutia? Beautiful picture by the way with the sunset and greenery; looks like a version of heaven, to me.

Those are fantastic palms! The location is so far away from palm land yet you have perfectly grown palms! Congratulations!

Jubutias are indeed slow in my experience. Slower than a Jube, at least to start.

I have two (possibly three) and neither are anywhere close to the speed of the Butiagrus mules. I'd say they grow about 1/5 or 1/6 the speed.

At least to start.

I recall there was a big one up in Walnut Creek but that thing was old.

Here's my biggest Jubutiagrus (Butaea?)

It's about 6 feet tall to the tip of the opening spear, about 7 feet wide.
