Oliver, I respect you and know you've traveled the length and breadth of Madagascar "so many" times but your comment seems out of character :)

In the pics below is a palm either Ampasindavea OR Vatovavy blue and the other is "touted" Ovobontsira OR Carlsmithii sp.

Please feed my "curious/keen" mind more info Oliver :)

All best Pete

All i know is that nothing is certain in malagasy palms !! :winkie:

My young D ovonbontsira is coming from seeds probably form RPS sold as D ovonbontsira more or less 10 years ago ..

The oldest one you show on this post is a picture i took in Analalava reserve near Foulpointe in 2013. This one was in a place with a lot of D carlsmithi, but was quite different because of its stunning swollen sheaths. Mijoro showed the same in his publication on https://www.palms.org/palmsjournal/2010/v54n3p141-151.pdf. It could be D ovobontsira, but note sure at all

There is no link between thos 2 specimens ..

Thanks for the link Oliver :greenthumb:

Your "last" comment" of being no link between the 2 which was just as I thought, so how can your Ovo( amps/vat blue) be linked to the Carlsmithii/ maybe Ovo?

Oliver, do you "think" that Ovobontsira is a completely different looking palm to what we "see on the web"?

Sorry for being "so persistent" with info Oliver, but thats how I am when Im chasing palms, I just dont let up :)

When i say there is no link, it's just about their origine, if the id are good, it could be the same species ...

I dont't think that ovobontsira is a different looking to what we see on the web. My picture taken in Analalava is very closed to those of Phil arrowsmith on Palmpedia : http://www.palmpedia.net/wiki/Dypsis_ovobontsira

Only "time" will tell with Bill A's, Jeffs and all the many they have sold to keen buyers Bo, Kim, Justin etc :)

I "believe" the below from yr Ovo Palmpedia link, also "if" it had such close "allies" with Carlsmithii Im sure POM would write that. :)

All best, traveller extraordinaire Oliver, Pete :)

As with many of these Dypsis, the true identity of this palm appears to be getting less certain instead of more (Nov, 2014). It is no longer certain that the above featured photos are the real deal. There is apparently more work to be done before any positive identifications can be made. Stay tuned.
