Hey Guys hows the palmetum looking now and where exactly in the gardens is the palmetum on a map?

Hi Shane, Colin would be best to answer your question on how it looks...it has been a while since I was there. As for location, most of the palm plantings are in the northeast corner along Northfields Avenue

Gold Coast, Queensland Latitude 28S. Mild, Humid Subtropical climate. Rainfall - not consistent enough!

Hi Shane and Daryl,

The last plant out i did  last Thursday, this is the 4th since the article was written in the Palm and Cycad magazine which incorrectly said we had planted 200 palm (should have said 750- 800), it now has over 900 palms with more planting next spring, still about 250+ more palms  to be planted in Royal botanic gardens in Sydney next spring/summer. It is getting harder to find new species these days so the plant outs  within the next 2 years will slow down.

Some palms planted last Thursday,

45 L Dypsis sp bef

45 L Dypsis carlsmithii

5 Ceroxylon ventricosum

5 Chamaedorea oblongata

2 extra Chamaedorea elatior

2x5  Chamaedorea ..............NFP

2 Ravenea sp

2 Ravenea krociana

2 Dypsis ambositrae

a few unusual Howea forsteriana

+ many,many others

regards

Colin

Ben Smith, Palmsforbrisbane, found it for the Wollongong Botanic Gardens. If you want palms in Australia, contact Ben. If not on his published list,

Being a collector himself he grows many rare palms  himself and many of us share seed with him, ring him and ask him if he has want you want.

Many species do not make his stock list (sold before he has a chance to put them on it)  also there is a courier who delivers to Sydney for him.

It is always better if you buy a few at a time as the freight costs stays nearly the same as for one. He has to take it to the freight company and may have charge for that
