There is a stand of what I believe to be Syagrus cocoides in Mindu Park in Manaus. I think it is a very handsome palm. It is an understory palm. But, it does get up to where it gets more sunlight.

Very informative Photos! We get an good impression of this nice Syagrus species growing in its natural habitat. And besides that in all its stages: as adult, as juvenile tree, and as seedling. :)

It is a gracefull little palm. It could be used in landscaping here no problem. But, few native palms are used in landscaping aside from Euterpe olearcea. That is actually a shame as so many of the native palms are great species.

But is this palm really S. cocoides? Looking in the book of Lorenzi et al. (2004) there it is written: »Folhas … plumosas, …« And the photos look also very different. :hmm:

That is what I figured it was. I just looked up the palms at the park and the syagrus found there is not this one. It is the Syagrus Inajai. I apologize I got the name wrong.

Okay, even as S. inajai it looks still very beautiful. :)

But here another question. According to Lorenzi et al. (2004: 209) the former Cocos weddellii is synonym to Syagrus cocoides. I found in the old book Palmeiras do Brasil by Bondar (1964: 88) that this palm is toxic: »Cocos weddellii Drude, 1882.Goiás, Mato Grosso, Maranhão Piauí. Nome local: Patí. É palmeira tóxica. Usam-se no norte as inflorescências como tingui, para tontear os peixes. Não se aproveita dela, na alimentação, nem o palmito, nem o côco. É altamente ornamental, elegante e esguia.« But in Lorenzi: »Os frutos são ricos em óleo coméstivel.« How does this match together? Do you have an explanation?

Pal,

Here is a link on the Syagrus inajai. http://www.florestaaguadonorte.com.br/palmeiras-da-amazonia/pupunharana/#! . I had this confused with the Syagrus cocoides which I have seen in the eastern part of Amazonas near the state of Para. At least that is what I identified it as. As to being toxic I do not know. It is common for indians to make fish poison, called timbo I had forgotten that I had a lot of the Syagrus inajai on some land I had in Manaus. It is called pupunharana which means pupunha like. Pupbunha being the peach palm or Bactris gasipaes. The fruits are eaten by animals in the forest.

Thanks for this post! For some strange reason Syagrus are not very popular here on the Big Island, so I had not yet heard of the inagai but I am a big fan and grow serveral other species and hope that I can find and plant one here.

Lee,

This is an attractive delicate palm and I am sure it would do well there.
