TIA,

Angel

I think I got this in 2011 as a seedling. After a couple years I planted it out in an area beneath some pine trees (the neighbors). So it was perpetually starved of water. All the pines were cut down this past winter. :) Here's a pic of it feeling much better. Like most Syagrus, on the slow side getting started.

It is in full sun here on the coast. It's been unfazed by cool winter temps down to 31F. As a comparison, there is a Syagrus picrophylla close by that spots from cold every winter. It also has a slight metallic sheen to the leaves; pretty cool!

We have an adult tree at the Palmetum that we planted in the ground about 15 years ago. We got it from Larry Noblick of Montgomery Botanical Center 19 years ago, well before it was described as a new species (by Larry himself!). It is very tough, since it withstood all kind of droughts and winds when the palmetum was still unfinished. It is nice looking, mid-sized, with close rings, therefore slow growing. It does not go up as many other Syagrus. The white fruits are neat looking too.

This is not a great picture; it was taken a couple months back. I was struck by how it went from straight strap leaf to full pinnate in one leaf. Usually, there are a number of mixed leaves first on Syagrus. It's about a meter tall now..

Thanks Josh. This is the newest planting area, as a half dozen huge pine trees on just the other side of the fence came down in 2015. It's now a race to the sky for everything in this raised bed.
