This little cutesy of a palm is Dypsis rosea. It throws a pink/red new frond every couple of months during warm weather and its trunk has a blush in it too. Anyone else growing this species. Mine's about four or five years old.

I have a few that I bought on line from a south east Queensland nursery. I got them in autumn as bare rooted seedlings. They have a few spots now but overall I'm happy with how they have come through winter and they all have new spears. Not sure when or if I'll plant them out.

Jim,sorry for the off-topic question; does the trunk to the left of Dypsis belong to Phoenix cross of reclinata with roebelenii?

This is really D. rosea after 2 years? Here is one of mine after 2 years. 6 leafs so far and one of the slowest palms i ever grew from seed.

Beautiful - Jim and everyone else. I have long admired this palm and had considered it for mygarden but I eventually concluded that it would not work here. Jim, in your experience, is this a pretty good Bay Area grower? Do you need to provide any special conditions or coddle it to an enormous degree? Do you think it would survive in a San Francisco location that also grows, albeit slowly, some of the sturdier New Caledonians? I have a spot that opened up with the removal of a small tree fern and I have been wondering what palm I should place there.

Thanks, Thom

This is my little rosea, planted barely a month ago. I hope someday it will grow up to resemble Bill Austin's gorgeous specimen, shown here in a photo from January 2012. Maybe Bill will give us an updated photo? :)

Thom, I guess it would depend on what part of SF you're in. D. rosea is a fairly slow growing palm in my garden and only seems to grow when temperatures are consistently 80F daytime. Late fall through early spring it's growth is practically nonexistent. Maybe someone in a cooler climate whose tried this species can chime in.

Kim,

with your killer growing climate it will catch up to bills in no-time :greenthumb:

keep us posted on your grow.

Jim,

this is a great palm for California and fun not to mention an easy grow. Every one should be growing this palm in their garden.

Looks good Jim! Those little Dypsis are great, perfect for an already crowded garden. And Bill's specimen is stunning!

I have one that I bought as D. rosea (was "Neophloga" / Dypsis "pink crownshaft" at the time). It turned out something slightly different (unofficial name as D. sp. "Maroantsetra", from the Pinnatifrons complex, perhaps a variation of rosea, or even some kind of hybrid). It's going nuts in my garden: 7 feet tall now, 4 feet of growth in one year, never stopped growing during winter. It holds 10 leaves at a time and new leaf opens every 4 weeks.
