Blue Pindo palm question

Is the Blue version of this palm a sub species? of Pindo or are they a crap shoot as far if they can turn blue or not.  Did my searches here and in the web in general. Even read Phil's article about Pindos and no real explanation of why some are green and others blue.

Seems like a crap shoot to me.  I have a few hundred 3G plants that I germinated from really blue Odorata seed and so far they are all green. I have a few other 7G-10G Butia from another source that are undoubtedly going to be very silver when mature. I do know that like most other species when placed in full sun mildly blue specimens will get bluer.  I also have mule seeds that I produced off of the bluest Butia that I have, but all of the seedlings are too small to see a difference yet.

I have seen some of phils blue pindos, they are VERY blue at 5 gallon size, think of a very blue brahea armata.  I have yet to see others this blue, has me wondering.  I have no idea at the provenance of these.

I was out in S. California and was at Joe's place (discovery island palms) and he had some VERY blue ones in I think 20? Gallon containers at a great price and very large. I don't know if I could have got even a small on in the bed of my truck if it was the only palm I was bringing home(I already had 15+ in there)   Just got me to thinking as Blue as his are if it was a different species or just dumb luck to get a blue one.

The 2 that I have are fairly blue (green when they were younger).....blue is relative to the eye I think...never really looked at them from that perspective....I'll get some photos and post them up...

The blue ones I have in the field were not as noticeable when I planted them from 7G but some seem to blue up as a 7G size. I cannot seem to discern them at any younger age but 95%+ of what I have in containers are definitely green. I do have a few dozen silverly-blue ones that I have kept and are starting to seed so I plan on crossing those next year and see what happens.

Very interesting, and great information.

I found this in the hundreds of 3gal pindo palms in front of a Home Depot earlier this season.  It caught my eye from across the parking lot, being silver blue and much smaller and stiffer than the rest of the greenish Butia in the mix.  I wasn't really in the market for another pindo, but this one had to come home with me.  It's hard to determine scale in my photo, but this plant is probably between 16 and 18 inches from the soil to the tip of the tallest leaf.  Even the smallest oldest leaves are stiff and silver blue, so blue coloration can possibly be apparent from a small size in some plants.

I have grown and seen lots of "blue" palms.  Half a dozen hand picked brahea armatas, chamerops cerifera, copernicia hospita, copernicia alba blue form, silver saw palmetto(blue form), brahea clara(less blue) and butia yatay(blue green).  I bought  the most blue butia yatay from phil when I visited when I saw those blue 5 gal pindos.  I wanted the form of the yatay, but the blue "pindos" phil had were more blue than any but the bluest armatas and hospitas I have seen.

I would have ran across the parking lot for that one! Great looking palm you found at Home Depot.

I had asked about 5 gallon blues from Phil but he didn't get back to me. He thought he might be sold out but had to look.

Yes, Joe's were stunning.

Joe NC that one should grow to be gorgeous. Speaking of Blue Butia's in parking lots, had to stop and take a picture of this one today that is down the street from my work.

Arrived...and planted between rain storms. Going into winter will have thick layer of mulch on top of the mostly sand/soil mix it's planted in and protected/covered for 4 months.

My humble addition...ignore the Brahea in front.....the B. odorata is center.

Here it is two year later, sorry it hard to see those other palms are growing faster and providing some overhead protection. Should have some good pictures next year.

Here is mine..  It is still establishing and different in form than my other Butia... perhaps a bit slower growing in my experience too. The leaves of the other are dark green and held higher with the arching more 'upright'.

Here are some older blues I have. Even in the cloudy conditions you can tell they aren't as green as the grass.
