Dypsis arenarum and lutescens - how to tell apart?

This isn't easy.

D. arenarum and lutescens are close enough in appearance I can't hold it against anyone who mixes them up.

But, there are a couple of ways.

Arnies branch more sparsely than lutes; arnies "split" and grow two heads from a stem, while lutes pup at the base.

Arnie stems are a lot thicker, too, though that doesn't usually become apparent till they mature.

Arnies' inflorescenses only branch to one order, while lutes' branch to two.

Here's my arnie, it's so glad to see you:

Here's a picture of a lute I took earlier today while hunting the elusive Wild Car.

Dave, they both branch to two orders with Lutescens mostly to 3 orders. I disagree with the pupping and spitting as they both do the pupping from what I see.

Okay Len, I haven't seen mine do any pupping, but I have only one

Any ID thoughts?

Haha. Can't help there. The board of directors saw both in habitat together and it was hard to tell them apart. The Arenarums on Sainte Marie didn't have the color Lutescens has. That plus long petioles helped somewhat for me. I saw one Arenarum that had super glaucous color which was cool.

here's a pretty old clump. They get badly burned from the cold sometimes but recover quickly, right before the summer heatwaves come and burn up the foliage again.
