Who am I? I am from Acrocomia!

Anyone feel comfortable speculating on the species.  It's obviously a big ole spiny Acrocromia.

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I'm not shy, Wanna see my crack?

in all seriousness, what would have caused this huge fracture in the trunk?  It's growing in a rather soggy patch of ground in my neighborhood.

I forgot to mention, that trunk is about the diameter of a Royal Palm.

A complete guess here, but maybe A. crispa with cold damage?

Thats a very robust Acrocomia, maybe A. media?

The trunk crack is from the palm taking up lots of water very quickly, especially since it is growing in a soggy spot. I have seen that happen to palms growing here at Leu Gardens in wet locations; Syagrus romanzoffiana, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, Livistona chinensis, Caryota maxima. Doesn't seem to harm them and these often have the trunks eventually 'fill in" and the cracks aren't really visible after awhile.

Rich, this tree was certainly exposed to the hard winters of 09-10 and 10-11.  But I discounted cold because there isn't any damage to the surface of the trunk, or trunk constriction.  For what its worth (and I don't think its worth much), the neighbors say it dropped to 15 one of those two winters.  I think they took that reading from report that came from Bartow airport just a few miles away.  However, I recently looked up those records on weather underground and I can't find anything near 15 (and I'm not surprised since the queens and roebelenii in local landscapes didn't die).  Since 15 would have shattered the old record of 19, I suspect they found an error when they did their routine equipment review that follows such an event.  In fact, the 3 coldest nights I could find at Bartow were 19, 19, and 20 but none of these records were set recently.  So, I don't think this plant has been below 20, at least not unless it was around in the 1980's.

Eric, your explanation of the crack seems logical to me.  I was wondering if hurricane Charlie could have caused it, but that was so long ago. I think its a beautiful tree, even if best enjoyed from a distance.  Those thorns are WICKED.  Its on property owned by CSX and they would probably donate it to a worthy cause (I have approached them about it).  It certainly deserves a more public locale.  But with the crack, I stopped the discussion.

Yes, Dave, considering the popularity of the Post-Apocalypse entertainment genre these days, I can picture a zombie impaled and stuck to the trunk with arms and legs flailing while Lady Gaga is doing...something...in a great costume.

Well too much water could very well be the case, that's generally not a problem here

Looking at some old posts, I would put A. intumescens on the short list of ones to consider. Apparently the Bishocks had one in Miakka a dozen or so years ago

Faith still has the palm, and several other Acrocomia species. My A. aculeta came from John many years ago. Its a Biggin now.
