Ravenea rivularis in La Habra - by request

Recommended Posts

The other night I was chatting with some fine Floridian Palmtalkers and they wanted to know what Ravenea rivularis look like in these parts. And, the answer is, pretty good, if you water them enough.

The pictures below were all taken within a mile or two of my garden.

Rav-rivs do need their water and care, though.

If you don't water them enough, they look like they lost a gunfight at the OK Corral.

Here's some more, including some near the Romanian Baptist Church on La Habra Boulevard.

Some palms, like queens, gain drought tolerance with size and the establishment of a large root system.

Others, like Rav-rivs, don't.

The palms in the first picture haven't had anything except rain water for a couple of years at least.

The same as the queen palms in the second picture, both taken near Beach and Whittier in La Habra, California.

Excellent posts and pics, thank you for sharing. I really enjoy learning about this particular palm.

Do you have any insight into their nutritional requirements? I recently learned the power of Mg with my 5g indoor-outdoor trio.

All I really know is they seem to do well here in the Land o'La La

I hear they have a lot of problems with magnesium deficiency, so it is suggested to dump a pound or so of epsom salts on them periodically, and wash in with lots of water.

Me neither!

Mine is the Ichabod-cranensis variety . . . . (Sleepy-hollowensis!)

I bought 2 when I knew nothing about palms, gave one to my GPA at beach, and I'm just gonna find large pot and put the other in it on my Patio and confine its growth. Can't give it away lol

Those pics are great thanks Dave. Now I'm tempted to plant one or thee in my current garden mainly due to how easy they are to come by and I'm getting a little tired of waiting for my sprouts to grow large enough not to step on or mow over. Slugs and snails were the biggest problem for my Ravenea rivilaris in my old garden. Every winter the young plants would get hammered, then they would spend all of spring, summer and most of autumn replacing their crowns. One eventually gave up but I think that was growing in a sandy patch that was difficult to keep moist. The remaining plant has grown large enough to to be troubled by the slugs but has endured some long droughts. I try and give all the palms in my old gerden a weekly or fortnightly soak.

If this palm is grown well, then it can live up to its name. Great pics, Dave. Some of the prime examples look like minature jubes! The problem we have here with this palm, seems to be many... I have seen a few like some of the nice ones you have shown, but for the most part, this palm doesn't like South Florida.

Beautiful Ravenea rivularis :D I love these palms & they look to me when mature almost a cross between a Coconut & a Jubaea...

I'm planning on buying a couple after Christmas & keeping them in tubs for as long as possible...

They are great looking palms, so is it the cultural problems you don't like Josh?

no cultural problems here. They grow just fine...

I never was a big fan of theses. My dear friend Tom C and company at three branches nursery in Florida were some of the first nurseries  putting this palm in mass cultivation. hence big box stores may years ago. ever since I have lost my appeal for this now ultra common palm. :(

although there is a 40yr old specimen in LA near my office that towers over the telephone poles I still enjoy looking at. When it drops seeds the ground turns red under the tree
