Germinating W.Robusta Seeds- Help/Advice

RobustaEnvirons

Recommended Posts

I got up this morning and looked at the leaf of my W.Robusta. Not sure, but it looks like it spread a little more down the leaf! Oh boy. Now I'm worried. What the heck! It's just going to kill off the leaf and then the darn thing with be back to only having 1 leaf! I hate this. It was doing so well too. It's got me frustrated. It's come so far to just have its large leaf burn up like this.

I moved it back to the bay window for the daytime sunshine. I think all this could definitely be due to the heating, but I don't really know. For days on end I had put it on the furnace vent along with my seed to speed along growth of the new leaf. Maybe this is due to all those days ontop of the vent. Or, maybe it's something else. :crying:

It did fine for all these months (September- early January) when I just kept it on the bay window (as shown) and didn't move it at all. Should I just keep it on the bay window where I had it and not move it for the night and all that (despite the chill coming through the window)? It's 62F right there where it is, but it doesn't have that vent hitting it all the time since its just out of range of the vent below the ledge.

Any advice is welcome as always! Thanks. :(

UPDATE: My seeds have been really going to town! Its like they're in a race. Lol.

Oddly enough they responded positively to being put on the hot air furnace vent. They have been doing very well.

I'm grateful.

Just a little update.

My seedlings have grown very well. They've shown no problem growing in my West/Southwest facing Bay Window all these months. They just keep on growing! I would put them outside but I worry about bugs(or ants, beatles, and etc) getting the containers. I have to bring these back in my house once October rolls around, I can't have bugs in the house under any circumstances.

Also, right now the temps have been fluctuating so much that I can't ever count on temps being warm (some nights its still dropping below 32F here although not too often). This week is supposed to be colder.

Aside from all that I have no place outside to put them (like a patio or something). They could get in the way or accidentally get knocked over.

They seem to be thriving being where they're at. I have 100% success rate so far. I plan on giving these to family members in May when its warmer. That'll give them more time to grow so they look even more impressive.

My bay window gets sunlight from 1pm onwards. As we approach Summer, the daily hours of sunlight hitting my bay window increases! We are now receiving around 6.5-7 hours of sunlight on a sunny day.

I'm trying to find a bench to put under my bay window so I can maybe set them on there and they won't be bothered by people in the front yard. But then still I could get bugs in there, so I don't know.

We'll see what happens I guess.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I am wondering how big your seedlings are now. I might end up buying some seeds to germinate for the heck of it, there are a lot of offers on Amazon for 100 seeds for like $3 (I have a gift card) but I am not sure where they are from or how old they are.

We were discussing Amazon vendors at Christmas dinner tonight. Our niece and her husband own two cleaning companies and joined Amazon as sellers. Our niece told us that Amazon vets all its vendors carefully before letting them come aboard - Amazon's reputation is at stake too. Certainly you can't directly correlate a seed/plant vendor with a cleaning company but sounds like Amazon tries to do some due diligence. However, the buyer can end up paying 1.5 to 2x more for stuff through Amazon instead of buying direct, i.e., a $50 rare palm bought from an internet seller costs up to $100 bought from the same seller on Amazon. I've seen such a case. So, buyer beware.

Maybe a thoughtful PTer will send you Washy seeds for cost of postage. I'd do it if my Washy hadn't succumbed to wilt a few years back.
