Two pics showing our Copernicia ekmanii in the garden.  Even at a small size its very glaucous leaves add contrast to the mostly green surroundings.  It's growing in full sun and never gets any supplemental water or fertilizer yet.  Maybe if I did it would speed up its growth a little.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Awesome.  Just love the blue green.  Copernicia palms are growing on me, but just hard to grow in So Cal unless you can pony up the bucks and get lucky to find one of such size.  Just awesome form and color of a palm.  Will look great even if they are slow.

The only Copernicia I've found to be a "no go" in Arizona.Just too cold sensitive!

Nice, Al. Mine are still in pots, just getting close to planting size.

Beautiful contrasting color as you point out.  How long in the ground to get to that size where you are, and how small was it when you planted it?

Whoa!!! That Bertro looks fantabilous!!

I think they are more cold hardy than folks think.

Here is a pic of mine that endured freezing (short duration) temps to 30F 7 times this year

It has also flushed a new set of leaves in the dead of winter..

That's interesting that ekmanii and berteroana are not the same cold tolerance... it's definitely the second on the list of cold hardiness for Copernicia.

Al that C.ekmanii is stunning! Sadly my only one died, but I would certainly try another!

My C.berteroana bought locally is doing fine except for some cow pruned leaves.

Thanks for all the nice photos!

Cindy, did you ever get another C. ekmanii?  If yes, how is it doing?  I am going to try one in my yard from Noel Pecunia.   I would love to have one that would develope the amazing glaucous color like the one posted from Kona.

I did get another one also from Noel Pecunia and here it is. Note keys for scale.

Never once given supplemental water or fertilizer. It’s in full sun on a slope in rather poor rocky soil but doing fine nevertheless.
