Purple Queen

Recommended Posts

It's hard to get excited over a Queen in SoCal, but after pulling off an old leaf base my Franken-queen is showing purple, and after some debate with myself I decided to take some pictures and post here.

That is all. :mrlooney:

Reminds me of Hawaii...:winkie:

But seriously, I really like nicely grown queens. I have several in my yard. I should post some pics of mine too.

To show the queen haters what's up...:P

I've never understood the haters.

Just because the palm is easily grown and common?

Not necessarily because of that, although you do see them everywhere around here. They have their place as a very easy to grow palm tree.

The thing is that they get expensive to maintain once they grow higher than a pole saw can reach. Then they tend to get overtrimmed, making them look like a brush, and the climber will usually use spiked boots, damaging the trunk. Getting a bucket truck for trimming is much more expensive. It can cost couple of hundred just to trim a few trees, and you have to do it several times per year.

They are not self-cleaning, and a queen that's not maintained properly is an eyesore.

Nice Queen and I have way too many but really do like these palms.  There are a few that have a very compact petiole which I really like.  I had one in the old yard that had a lot of glaucous and fat leaflets that was really cool  Like you said, once they get big they are difficult to maintain so "stunt" them early and they slow down.
