Howdyall, spring is coming soon hip hip hooray!

And, my thoughts turn to lust - palm lust.

Some of you may have received some free Dypsis plumosa seed I sent a while back. I kept a few, threw them in a pot and they germinated.

Here's one of the babies in my hairy, average size man's mitt. Note the long root, that dives straight down, then jogs a bit where it hit the bottom of the pot. Handle them with care, don't break that root and don't knock the seed off the plant. They don't always die when that happens, but it sets them back.

So, I hope some of you have gotten some of yours to sprout! Konstantin, how are yours over there in Greece? I know I sent others some, too let me know how they're doing.

So far they are doing fine in my cold frame on the heat mat. I water them almost every week and they remain deeply green. Besides I think they are on the way to their second leaf, albeit at a slow speed because of the winter time.

Here's the mama palm

Just to remind, about ten years from seed.

It's about 9 feet (3 M) tall and 6" (15 cm) thick in the trunk.

Here are my lot with a Nannorrops ritchiana closest to the camera. Mine show a bit of red also but it seems to have become less intense. I've just moved them into a position that is exposed to more sun.

That's normal.

Really scream!

They're dark red for a couple years then they're green. Heaven alone knows why.

A new update just before begin of this growing season. One plant has a pinnate leaf with 6 leaflets and the other one with 8 leaflets. They both do ok albeit they are still rather wobbly in the pot. I wonder, whether top soil is to porous and there is not enough moisture around base.

They always wobble for me, until I put extra dirt around the bases. Once the plant grows more and gets multiple roots out the bottom, they're a lot steadier.

I also got from you Dave Dypsis plumosa and started sprouting. I'm very happy :) Thank You very much!!! :) These sprouts are a beautiful surprise for me on Easter :)

My seedlings dypsis plumosa in a larger pot. They have very long roots about 30 cm.

Here are some of the Dypsis plumosa seeds that you sent me. They've been growing in my greenhouse all spring and summer(filtered light in the morning and afternoon). I've let the soil dry out between waterings and they are growing at a pretty nice rate.

Here are my results:

The one on the left front is developing its first pinnate leaf. They have almost completed their first summer in my greenhouse moving inside soon, as temperatures in Germany start to drop to 30s and 40s at night.

Mine look about like this.  They're as close to the window as I feel comfortable with winter coming on.  I hope they put out more leaves soon, but they all have at least their second up and out.

Maybe too much light or a nutritional deficiency? 

Naples (inland), FL - technically 10a but more like 9b in the winter :hmm:

It is sunny spot, around 3/4 of the day direct sun light, I should maybe put something to filter sun light for seedlings ?

You can see the yelow is in the new leaves. I think is too much water and lack of nitrogen and iron.

Less water and you can feed it with a leaves fertilicer, but with half dose. With my small seedlings in Winter is the best.

I had 3 germinated, but one did not like the raining season in Nicaragua. the other two seem to grow steady.

Hmm.

Maybe a bit more austere environment? Out in the open, fast drainage? They should be KILLER for you over there in the other Big M.
