Went to Torrance CA and found in an Indian market, and, for sale, some palm sugar.

Any thoughts as the kind of Palm it's from?

Does it taste any different from regular sugar (i.e., "cane" sugar)?

Probably an Arenga, but I couldn't say which species. 

 

User00 has told me that jaggery sugar from Arenga species is quite popular in Sri Lanka.

The ingredients just say "cane sugar" so im guessing it is just Saccharum processed with the jaggery method.

Typical palm jaggery is labeled karuppatti and will list the species it is derived from on the label, at least from what Ive seen around here, as it is much more expensive than cane jaggery.

in here  jaggery made from coconut,borassus flabellifer and  caryota urens. caryota jaggary is the tastiest one
