Good Work, RLR.   It was really easy to get reinstated.

Does anyone know if the Genera Palmarum revision out yet?  Is there a good discount anywhere?

We (Natalie Uhl, Bill Baker, Connie Asmussen, Madeline Harley, Carl Lewis, and I - John Dransfield) are currently trying to finalise the manuscript for the revised Genera Palmarum. We hope it will be ready for the printer this year which would mean publication some time next year. It should look pretty different from GP1.

I am sure there will be some good deals on purchase.

When I talked with JD at the IPS Board meeting in San Francisco in May (2007) he said that work had just been completed on GP2. Apparently, the newly discovered palm in Madagascar (that was discussed here on the Forum) caused quite a bit of extra work and subsequent delay. I believe JD said that the publication date is now early 2008, but I don't recall the exact date.

bgl, thanks for the update.  We'd received word in another post that the fantastic new Madagascar palm was being hurriedly included in the book, so the "wait" is minimal compared to what'll be available shortly.

The original edition must have been costly to get ready for print, with its huge number of drawings.  The work of integrating photos into the text must make the job of preparing the book for print even more difficult, so it should be understandable that there'll be a few months of delay.

Not to mention that such a big book requires a huge amount of effort at proofreading and ensuring that the figures, literature cited sections and indexes are accurate.

Here's the latest news.

At the moment the copy editor is reading through the manuscript, picking up typos (shock, horror!) and other signs of human frailty. Actually she's very thorough and it's a pleasure to have someone so good read through the manuscript. The book designer has given us a few pages (subfamily Nypoideae) to look at and we have had a discussion based on what he produced. A second version is being prepared. He is also beginning to work on a sample cover that will also be used in publicity. At the moment, it looks as if we shall have a large format book, slightly larger in page size than the old GP, and with about 650 pages. The design is radically different from the old GP and I must say I am very excited about how it looks, so far.

I spent last week going through the copy-editor's comments on Calamoideae, Nypoideae and Coryphoideae. Once we have approved the page design, then the page setters can start to work on the taxonomic sections of the book.

The new coryphoid from Madagascar is in the book - I suspect we may need to make a few last minute changes to the description as all being well I shall be visiting the new palm in September (how exciting!).

So, it's all going ahead. Publication is set for somewhere mid to late spring next year. There will almost certainly be a pre-publication sale that will allow IPS members to prurchase the book at discount.

That's all I can tell you at the moment.

For what kind of person is Genere Palmarum II useful? It's a pretty big chunk of money...

Is the writing understandable to someone who doesn't have a degree in biology, or is it perhaps too technical?

Part of it is what you would call "technical" but part of is pretty much in plain language. For anyone who is seriously interested in palms, this is one of the most important publications ever to be published. And there are plenty of great photos!

I find GP II to be an amazing book. I surely use wikipedia/wiktionary a lot when reading it. And still parts of it I don't understand. Every couple of weeks there comes a legitimate reason to open it. Found it particularly useful with seed genus identifications

Sounds like it may be worth it... I checked out the sample page images on IPS, and the range information is very cool!
