I just saw a large Phoenix dactylifira (25 feet or so) for sale for the bargain price of $6199.00

Is the seller out of line? Should just plant a seed?

Sounds about right to me.  You could look around and compare prices from other nurseries, and also check and see who includes delivery and installation in the price.  Plus there are several varieties of P. dactylifera based on quality of the fruit.  If I'm not mistaken, I believe some of them have been cultured to produce large fruits without seeds and have to be tissue cultured, so growing from seed is out of the question.

Not to mention it might take 20 years to get a palm that size out of a seed, plus the price of water, fertilizer, and labor during that time.
