Jubaea hybrids growth

Today I put in the ground my potted hybrids. I hope this thread will help me track their growth. I think there's a few of us in the southeast upstate SC growing these hybrids. 

Here they are today 3/25/2016

first picture from left to right: BxJ then BJxJ then BJxB(flat leaf)

second picture left to right: JXB then a BJxB(V-leafs)

There are 3 palms in the second picture...what's the middle one?

Oh I get it.  Well, then you know these are way too close together...but I do the same thing!  Pack 'em in!

Yea I know they are close. Will see how packed it gets there. I like palms planted close and the shade they make.

I'm subbing this. I have a small BxJ and I'm interested in what kind of growth you get outta yours.

JxB is clearly the fastest of the Butia/Jub hybrid combo's here where I'm at.  BxJ's are no faster than a Butia Ordorata, while JxB is roughly 50% faster in spear growth.

My butia yatay x jubaea shows a rather fast growth when temperature is high. Last year we had a hot July and August when it pushed out a new leaf every second week!

I think butia itself has some variable growths. I have two butias planted the same size and same day in the ground. One is almost twice the size and cold hardier than the other one. 

The BJxJ vleaf had grown the most in pot for me. Anyway, the race has started. We will see which hybrid wins by the end of the summer.

Actually it looks smaller than it is.

It's close to one meter in hight. And I belive it could become huge.

Funny you say this as I have a 1g BxJ that's still in the grass like strap leaf stage and I marked it yesterday. My little "greenhouse" has averaged in the low 90's during the day since I got the palm and today I saw the very slightest of movement in the marked spear! So I answered my own question.

All of them really start to put on growth when the lows get into the high 70's/low 80's here.

This is a great thread! I have some hybrids from Patric that are going in the ground soon. I bought them last year. I definitely want to keep up with this thread too.

Update Today sept. 13th 2016

one palm is down. I think the cool damage was lethal on it. It's the bjxb flat leaf. 

Others have grown a bit. Bjxb v leaf really took off on its first year in the ground. Anyway I really hope they do good on their first winter in the ground.

They are doing well!  Don't give up on the bjxb...  mine didn't thrive at all until this year.  All of the leaves went crispy.. which wasn't due to cold at all. It then grew a deformed miniature frond and finally has the permanent spears starting. It was almost at the point where I thought about removing it.  I will post a separate thread about it soon.  It looked slightly off when I planted it but I didn't know what was normal or not.. especially with the hybrid stuff.

yea that one wasn't a fighter. It wanted to die   Anyway its dead all the way. I am happy with what I still have

Oh for sure !  You have an outstanding collection.  Do you plan to protect this winter?

As for protection I think only overhead plastic to protect from freezing precipitation. As they did well in pots outdoors with only plastic sheet to protect from water getting into the crowns. Now in the ground they are probably more protected from the cold, but as precaution it will help get them established.

I would be careful with plastic.. I'm sure you know what you are doing..  here it would raise the humidity and cause frost inside the plant...but I live in a colder climate as well. 

They look great..  have the trunks expanded a lot yet?

The trunks haven't expanded that much, but I expect more growth the coming summer. Anyway, lets hope for a milder winter this year. That is if global warming was made up by china (jokes)

 I dont wrap my palms, I just put it over so snow or rain doesnt get in the crown during the cold months. Check my other thread showing how I protected the potted ones.

The remaining survivors. BJXB, JXB, BJXJ.  JXB got much more damage than the others but still grew several damaged fronds. I am happy with what I still have and proud of the growth.

I love these hybrids. But its nearly impossible to get seeds as this is the only affordable way to get these hybrids for me,

In Germany its a kind ot gambling to by plants without certificates. Already lost plants and paid for scraping them. With certificates the price doubles or more.

That's plant is really starting to put on the beef. Looking great. Can't wait till mine looks like that. Nicely grown.

For about four month in summer it gets sun from 10am to 6pm, now with the lowering sun it is shaded after three o clock in the afternoon becouse of the neighbour's house.

Maybe its the shaded pics but your palm looks a really lush green
