Hey all.  Anyone in South Florida grow any tree ferns other than Cyathea Cooperi?  I have Cyathea Medullaris doing well in pots with lots of sun too.  A very small Cyathea Tomentosissima too.   How about Dicksonia Antarctica?  Two Cooperi in the ground.  One looks great and other has smaller leaves even after fertilizing.  Not sure what happened there...like to see what others may be growing here in South Florida.

They seem to do well around here too. I'm considering getting one, but I believe they need to be grown in the shade?

Can take quite a bit of sun if well watered.  Mine get about 3 to 5 hours of it from morning on.

Great looking plant. I used to have one until it croaked.

Why do you think it died?  I try to keep the water up well...several times a week in hot weather.

...I'm not sure. It was about two thirds smaller when I planted it and I installed a dedicated bubbler so it got plenty of water. It was on the north side of the house under a second story balcony and didn't get direct sun.

I'm in Sarasota, however, I'm growing Silver Lady (Blechnum gibbum) and Brazilian tree fern (Blechnum brasiliense). Mulch heavily to keep up the humidity near the fern.

I have Blechnum Gibbum but caterpillars eat the leaves.  Wonder if that is why it is unusual for down here.  Higher maintenance to get rid of the caterpillars..

Are there any updates on any of the above-mentioned tree ferns, if any of you are still active here on Palmtalk?

Blechnum gibbum is one I just have to have again at some point.  An adorable miniature tree fern and I have seen some doing well locally at Leu Gardens.

I had actually found one for sale in the summer of 2018 at a nursery in Southeast PA amd kept it as a houseplant for a few months after I had to bring it inside but I eventually let it get too dry and it died.  I am surprised it is not commonly sold as a houseplant or shade garden plant around here.  I think the Fern Factory has it for sale currently though.

I don't grow it anymore at all.  Couldn't keep the caterpillars off it.  My Cooperi does awesome
