I thought I'd post a photo I took a while ago of a group of palm trees.  They are located in front of the apartment complex in Long Beach.  Maybe after seeing this photo more people want to grow Washington palms to make tiki out of them.

Recycling Washintonia is a time-honored tradition.

Not just the trunks, but the flat leaves make the best

thatching (think Gilligan's island).

Very cool! I've been wanting to carve mine into a tiki.

I've seen pics of someone who had a bunch of their live palm trees carved into tikis. They looked really nice. They even were colored and had a high gloss finish to them.

I've seen live Washingtonia carved too.  There is one at a nursery in town.  I should get over and get a picture of it.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

I have a tall Washingtonia that I wish could be carved like that but after trimming it up my girl likes it so for the moment it will stay as is. Gotta love the look of those!

Crazy Al does some great work.  I recall a few years back someone getting in trouble in Oceanside, CA for carving one in front of their house.  Unfortunately it was between the sidewalk and street, so was actually controlled by the city.  It was someone prominent in the Tiki carving community if I recall correctly.  It was a bit controversial as many in the community liked his work, but the palm was still alive, which caused the municipal uproar.

Mine is from a guy with a road side stand in Cantamar, Baja California who carves them and sells them cheap.  Not the quality of what you have though Josh.

The detail on those tikis that crazy Al created is amazing! He's much more detailed than anything I have seen around Fl.

Danny,

I just did a HUGE palm delivery and install in your area (down town Palm springs) how far do you live from there?

I'm in the other side of the valley, towards the east. It's a 30min drive from my house to downtown PS.

I do most of my work in PS so I spend a lot of time out there.

What kind of palms did you  bring over. Anything rare and cool?

lots of big copernicias and coccothrinax species. lots of very mature specimens

big 8-10' tall acrocomia totai

7' tall zombia antillarum

5' tall ravenea xerophila

25 gal hyphaene petersiana

24' box brahea moorei

trunking Ravenea glauca

etc..

etc..

etc..

42 species in total (45 palms in total). this will be an instant PSSC stop when I'm finished with it.

I have always wanted to plant and help design a tropical desert oasis.

I have consulted and designed and built many coastal dypsis gardens. this was a very nice change of pace for me.
