About 2 years ago my Sabal minors started being affected by this black malady. It affects the blossoms only. As soon as the flowers begin to open on the spike the black pestilence melts the flowers away in a mass of goo. I thought it might be a smut and applied a rose  systemic fungicide, alas no cure. Can anyone identify what this is and how I can treat it. It has left my garden barren and without seeds.

yall are the best.

My cycads leaves show the same symptoms as your sabal's  blooms.

In my case it was butterfly catapillar. Yearly twice when the cycads puts out new leaves I spray chemical based insecticide.

It stopped the problem..

Love,

Kris.

If it's not lethal to the plant, why not let them grow into butterflies?

Your place is looking good Tony!

Tony, I suspect bacillus thurengiensis would take care of them with little to no risk to humans or kitty's.
