Bought a 25 gallon Pritchardia pacifica and needed to build a large enough container that would suffice for years to come.

Since I want it poolside, and have no more ground space, a planter is appropriate.

I figured a 4' x 4' x 4' planter from pressure treated lumber will hold for at least 10 years, or more.

Roughed in.

Trim complete.

Lined with plastic sheeting. Wet soil would deteriorate the wood very fast. I use a well draining potting soil. 20 huge bags!!

Almost there!

Used a watered down plum paint as a stain. That allows some grain to show through while protecting the wood a bit. I used black river rock as "mulch."

Now off to the next garden project!

Gratefully, the best of both worlds!

Looks great and I like that you have no fear of color ! The planter also looks to be a perfect perch for drinks during a pool party.

They are truly magnificent both that plant and your planter. Given that it is on wood if the time comes that it does go in the ground somewhere should be easy to transfer it-just pull the sides apart and slide it into spot. Way easier than a pot. I love that species-the epitome of the tropical Pacific captured nicely by your pool and tiki as well. What a great all-round setting. I wouldn't attempt that species here. Too cold for too long and my glasshouse isn't tall enough.

Planter came out great! Looks really nice with that stain. You lined with plastic did you put any holes in the bottom for drainage?
