This Dypsis onilahensis is growing at my mom's house in Orlando, FL, about a mile from downtown. I planted it about 12 years ago as a 1 gal. size plant. It has grown single stemmed,  no offshoots. I noticed yesterday it is flowering for the first time.

The photograph is not too good but it shows a nice species.
Could you post more pictures? Thanks.

I'd like to try that one.

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I took quick pics with my phone so sorry they are a bit blurry. I need to get back over with my camera as there is a Vriesea imperialis a few feet away with a 7ft inflorescence too.

How cold hardy are these?

Pretty darn cold hardy, as Dypsis go.  Certainly no issues with hours at 30 degrees.  I bet you they aren't too far off a king's ultimate hardiness.

Here in Orlando they have been hardier than the common D. lutescens.

12 years to that size?!  Gotta love that Florida growing speed.

It grew fast and reached that height about 5 years ago and has since slowed down.

Was that a California or a Florida freeze?

So Tin, have you acquired a new one to try in a protected spot yet?  My experience is that these have far less leaf tip browning than more commonly grown Dypsis lutescens, from either our dry Santa Ana's or from cold.  It's probably worthy of another try now that you have some additional canopy and have a little microclimate going in your garden.

hi tracy ... ironically, i plan to get another one this year.  i did get a hybrid from kevin weaver which was onilahensis with some other dypsis i forget.  but i do love the weeping form so much.  i do have a dypsis lutescens that has actually done really well for 12 years and have about 3 feet of trunk that was a crapshoot i bought from lowes way back then.

do you mid posting a pic of yours?  i remember seeing gary levine's 10 years ago when it was flowering and had about 7 feet of trunk.  i fell in love with the weeping form but you are right, with canopy now, i am going to give it another go.

thanks for asking

Given your success with the Dypsis lutescens, I would expect you won't have problems with your next attempt with the onilahensis.  My solitary weeping form wasn't a solitary when it was younger.  I acquired it with the intent of eventually planting it in Leucadia and kept it in an undersized pot to long and a couple of the other trunks died.  By the time it went in the ground it was solitary and has remained that way.  Growing error on my part.  It's been a good grower since I put it in the ground.  First photo it's behind the hibiscus and in front of the Dypsis pembana, photo was a few days before the start of this last winter (mid December 2021).  Second photo was at the beginning of Summer 2018, so 4 summers of growth between the two shots, but not 4 full years.

wow thats amazing growth for 4 years tracy.   well at least for me.  it looks very happy and i love how relaxed the leaflets are.  its weird because its a suckering palm and i would think this habit would persist indefinitely, just like lutescens.  in any case, thanks for posting and beautifully grown.

Not too large a footprint either, so you can fit them into an existing garden.  If you get one that is more prone to clumping and putting out a lot of trunks, obviously it will take up a bit more space, but still not as much as many other palms.

I was thinking about putting one in a large 42" pot I have.... I also have a spot, in the center of my garden with a huge foxtail, that  SCE says will have to go soon. It might be a good spot for a clumping one, since it is a shorter palm...

I bought 4x big 4" pots from Floribunda in the fall, and stepped them up to 1g pots immediately.  Fortunately I brought them into the garage the weekend it hit the mid 20s at my house... :)  I love the weepy form, it is really elegant with the big draping fronds.  It's also nice that it isn't a 20-30' diameter giant, since I have been functionally out of planting space for a while.  But there's always space for one more!
