During our trip 2016 in North-East of Madagascar, after the Masoala and Farankaraina near Maroansetra we did a trek in the Makira Protected Area.

Makira is a quite poorly known area of 370,000 ha protected in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society

We didn't manage to go until the highest altitudes of the area where Mijoro et al desrcibe in 2009 some very specific species (D ankirindro, D makirae, ...)  (see : https://www.palms.org/palmsjournal/2009/v53n3p125-146.pdf)

We saw anyway between 400 and 700 m high, some fantastic species and a great diversity of palms ..

Ready ? Let's go !!

First, one of the most beautiful of course

Dypsis thiryana

Ravenea albicans

I'm sure you'll like those photos because photos of this species in habitat are very rare ...

No comment ? really ? ^_^

So i continue with this very interesting species. It seems to be closed to Dypsis beentjei, but it's different because it doesn't have the central yellow line on leaves of D beentjei, and its inflorescences are straight and branched to one order. The stems can be up to 60 cm. I don't know what this could be ...

And an another very interesting probably unknown species !

Local people called it in Malagasy Ovomamy. I think its different of D tsaravoasira because of its very thin and numerous leaflets, thin stem with no marked crownnshaft and very long petioles when young. Unfortunately, we didn't find any mature specimen. I called it Dypsis sp. Ovomamy and i don't know what this could be

Great shots as always Olivier.  That Rav. Albicans is mindblowing!  From underneath it looks like a Malagasy version of a Ceroxylon.
