I'm mainly having problems with my Washingtonia Robusta and Royal palm seedlings but whatever insect is causing this damage also seems to love my African Rhino Horn banana tree.

I suspect it's the very small black caterpillars I see on my palms and banana trees. They also seem to create some sort of web like a spider because they hang in mid-air when I knock them off. I'm sure this is a very common insect but has anyone else had a problem with these? And what's the best thing I could do to prevent them?

One of the guys I buy palms from has this same exact problem; especially the first and third pictures. He forgets the name of the bug, but it's a tiny, almost microscopic bug(s) that eats away at the leaves like that. I've bought plenty of Chamaedorea microspadix and Chamaedorea Radicalis with leaves almost 75% percent eaten. He said it's not lethal to the plants, but it makes the plants look like crap. He said he's tried everything to no avail. Whenever I buy those same palms and plant in my yard, the problem seems to go away. Sorry- I know what I just said doesn't help much, but in any case, it's not lethal, so that's the good news.

At least you don't have those giant grass hoppers that takes big chunks out of your livistona chinensis and W. Robusta leaves! Those guys can do a number on leaves, and they're hard to kill with flip flops- Lol

I had some very similar damage to my palm seedlings coming into our winter a few weeks back now. I thought it was slug or snail damage so scattered pellets for them. A week or so after I noticed the damage was worse closer inspection I found a few cut worm caterpillars. Luckily I found them all and squashed them.

Slugs & snails will do that type of damage. Put a little epsom salt on the surface of the soil.
