Virginia Palm Trees!

I have five palms in my backyard and four of them have been through a winter with minimal to no protection. I have two Butias (Pindo Palms), one Needle Palm (that has suckers coming all around it!), one Mediterranean Fan Palm, and a Windmill Palm. 

The Mediteranian Fan Palms main trunk is dead, but all suckers around it are green and thriving! The trunk died from a combination of cold and bugs, in the winter the trunk was half way fried but began to reviving in the spring... But then a bunch of unknown bugs (I didn't know what they where) ate out the rest of it and completely killed it! But the suckers stayed green at all times and are now getting huge. All I did to it for protection was throw a few leave around it (that didn't do to much).

 

The Butias lost a few fronds, all the protection they had was a burlap potato sack wrapped around the trunk during a snow storm (a really bad one, I have never seen so much snow here, it got to about 9 or 10 inches.) But I am amazing how they pulled through it, and one of them even had some fungal infection going on (the one in the picture with the smaller fronds).

 

I literally did nothing to the needle palm. There was zero damage to it and it was fully covered in snow.

 

The windmill has not been through a winter here yet.

 

NOTE: All of these palms where either grown in Georgia or Florida so the ones taut went through a winter already where socked by the lower temps than they are used to. And they have only been in the groun a fully year so far.

Last winter was exceptionally warm. I'd be interested to see how they do in a normal winter, or if one of those god forsaken polar vortexs' passes through. That I think will be more an indication of how viable they are long term.

Regarding the photos, you need to reduce their size. I usually use the Microsoft Photo Manager included with Windows I believe. Or you can use another program you prefer. It's not hard to do. I suggest you save the reduced photos under different names if you want to keep the original.

I am getting some of those soon for Virginia. I am not sure how they will do in the winter there, but why not find out!
