Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Nice wide leaflet form. If that was growing in some shade, those leaflets would be even larger. This is one of my top 5 favorite cycad species Tom

The cone color is intense on ferox.

And the broms really add more color!

Great looking cone and plant!  There are so many different cycads I would have a difficult time picking 5, and due to a personal false start with ferox, would probably leave it off my top 5.  This was probably the first cycad of the Encephalartos species I bought long ago and killed it due to root rot before getting it past the band size pot.  Too much shade and water.  Unfortunately after that first ferox, I never tried another, despite growing many other Encephalartos since then.  In the intervening years, I figuring out how not to kill them (usually) and love my cycads as much as my palms if not more!
