A few months ago I collected seed from my Arenga engleri plant and planted them about ½ inch deep in some individual and community pots…Can anyone advise how long it will take for them to germinate? Also…I have some Sabal Palmetto “Lisa” in community pots that have sprouted up; having 25 and 30 plants per pot…How long should I let them grow in these pots before I remove them into individual containers?578a5f6f48a1e_arenggga005.thumb.jpg.4009

Frond,

i usually wait until at least two strap leaves fully develop on all seedlings before I break up the community pot.  I usually wait too long and it ends up being a tangled mess...

Thanks Jason, I better go locate some one gallon containers soon then...are Sabal seedling roots the same in terms of how and adults root system will die back when dug up...if I damage the roots on the seedling will this have the effect?

Not in my experience.  Sabal seedlings transplant very well.

I'd let the Sabals grow longer, maybe 2-3 months so as many germinate as possible. As Tank said, let them reach 2-leaf stage. They will separate easily when you unpot them. Search through the potting mix to recover newly germinated and leftover seeds that may germinate later. Sabals are very easy growers.

I would like to thank you all for taking the time to respond. This is the first time for me to grow these palms from seed, and your help will make me a better grower.

Best wishes,

John
