Sabal Minor Palm Planting work_July_2016

Recommended Posts

Dear Friends,

I welcome you all to yet another palm planting work,And this time its "Sabal Minor Palm"(Dwarf Palmetto). Like always we dug up the soil about 3feet x 3feet by 3feet depth.Since our garden soil is just clayey. All our palms had grown well in washed river sand.So this time we just filled the pit only with coarse grade sandy soil, little bit of coarse grade perlite,And some neem composite since i have here termite and fire ants problem.visuals of that work can be seen in following post. And i call this operation as "Operation Sandy".Once the palm stabilizes in its new home,we will feed it with all the needed nutrients.

And my special thanks to my ranch hand, without who's help this entire work would not have been possible.

Thanks and Love,

Kris.

Here's the still of our Hero,On whom the entire thread is based "Sabal Minor".(Dwarf Palmetto). This palm was grown in our roof top garden, and at present its plastic pot has totally disintegrated due to full sunlight, ageing and its roots busting out like kids rushing out from their kindergarten...forcing us to take immediate steps to planting this palm in the ground..

The palm was brought to its planting area..you can also see its pot condition !

20160722_104624.thumb.jpg.6c0c0df5cbd00e

Now we started removing all the remaining plastic fragments of that pot..

A close-up of the root ball..

The dug up pit is being filled and levelled with sandy soil

Now this Sabal Minor Palm is lowered into this pit

Course grade perlite and neem composite were added during the fill up !

Now we started to water this pit so that the soil settles down

That's all for now,More updates later. And i will post a link here of this palms initial years of growth in pot.

Thanks and love,

Good job. Sabah minor like all the water you can give them. They grow in the swamps here in their native habitat.

I'm so glad people around the world appreciate this palm like you do Kris. I've seen thousands of them in their natural habitat (which isn't far) before and it was incredible.

I was happy to see Sabal minor in Christchurch, New Zealand.  Yours is small, and in its new home might grow leaves as tall as 2 meters.

Dear  Siriwa,

Yes river sand work miracles for me,And along with the hot tropical climate and coastal humidity the overall effect is fabulous..

Dear Todd,

I will remember what you said they like water,I will try to flood the palm's base with water every week ends to make this palm feel at home.

Dear Meg,

Thanks for visiting and glad you like this palm.

Dear Brad,

Thanks,And as the saying goes grass is greener on the other side.i.e Asians all love palm varities that are not common to their place.

Dear David Martin,

Nice addition to your ground Kris. Definitely ready to escape that pot. Out of curiosity was the heel on it visible? Couldn't see from the photos. Good luck with it. We have 2 sabal minors and I really like their lower profile and how proudly they display their fronds.

I like the blow-by-blow description of your event, Kris. And I love the holes you dig. They satisfy my OCD needs.

The one in the LA Arboretum is really remarkable.  Like JT, I'm a long-term fan of Kris's holes.  Sabal minor might thrive well north of Shimoda.  I'll be in Tokyo in October, briefly.
