Is anyone growing Medemia argun?

If so please post some pictures here.

This is one palms that I had great difficulty locating. It took me 2 1/2 yrs to finally fine one and its not even that big. I have heard they do not do well in coastal San Diego, California so I decided to plant it out at my Vista garden since it is further inland. The average temperature difference is about 6 degrees warmer than my Carlsbad garden. Prayers send and I hope it makes it???

here is a picture or 3 of my little tyke....

These are great looking palms and look very much like Nannorrhops at the size you have Josh. Look forward to updates in the years to come.

Hi Pete,

the 5 gal I planted out is only 2 yrs old. It would have been much larger but it was pot bound for so long. once they set there "feet" they take off like a rocket ship.

I was shocked to see these sprout in only 3 weeks. I also read the same literature that they can take up to a year to sprout.  I thoroughly cleaned each seed by hand and soaked them in water for 2 solid days before putting them in a fast draining mix.

I checked the community pots today and they are sprouting like mad.

it will be sooner than later. Lots of folks have indicated they can take up to a 1year to sprout but this batch is really fresh. I think it may take longer for older seed to sprout?

Thank you for your kind presentation, but: :rolleyes:

(1) it seems to be too early yet, because only the seed petiole is visible (at least to me);

(2) I need a pic of only one most developed seedling;

(3) the side where the seed germinated should be in focus;

(4) the resolution of the pic should be much higher. :D

Josh, have you shaved the seeds? They look very glabrous!

I did not shave any.

I just cleaned off that spongy gingerbread smelling fruit and soaked them for 48 Hrs.

I had one planted but didn't take so hopefully I can get my hands on one again soon. Looking good josh! That one was happy in the pot which was an issue for me. I bet that yours will take off when it speeds the roots!

Cont..

Visuals of germinated seeds :

Now these seeds are removed from ziploc bags and were separated and cleaned :

IMG_3296.thumb.jpg.61a11459ace6d4dbf4d17

Then they were placed in normal sized terracotta pots and one liter mineral water bottle containing only washed river sand :

Btw they grew well in our hot wet tropical climate...

Hello Kris, many thanks for your germination pics. :greenthumb::) But I have still a problem with the seedlings; even on your photo I can’t decide :huh:

(1) if the sprout is only the seed petiole or

(2) if it is already seed petiole + cotyledonary sheath + radicle? :indifferent:

What I need is a pic showing at least the plumule (cotyledon) and still better also the eophyll.

Dear Pal,

I understand what you say...but way back in 2007. I just kept snapping stills of my work just for taking purpose.If you were active then palmtalk may be I would have clicked still that could be of more use to researchers.

But at least those who are germinating seeds from now on they could follow your directions on how take more useful still.

Love,

Kris.

  • 1 month later...

this tree is proving to be a very fast grower.

seeds were only sown August 15th

now they are starting to bust through the soil. I was told they can take up to 1 year to sprout so I sowed 200 seeds in the hopes of getting some sporadic germination. What I didn't expect is to have all of them sprout at the same time. every seed has a tap root anchoring it in the pot. YIKES!!!!!

they can defiantly handle the cold. I have a friend who has some (flowering size) in Borrego springs Ca. they see frost and freezing temps almost every winter.

what they don't like is prolonged cool weather. for example along the coastal regions or up in the bay area.

this palm prefers baking hot desert climates like your in Arizona.

What is weird Josh, is that the first leaf of my 100 seeds became visible today as well! The process started on Aug. 1st (soaking and de-husking), and the 1st sprouting of roots began 8-10 days later.

Good luck with yours! I'm sure you will find good homes for all of them (in the desert and warmer inland valleys hopefully).

Dear josh,

Results are great by this year end we could see around 150 to 170 seedlings.wish you all the best.

These palms love sunlight and heat very much. When there is no sufficient heat and sunlight their fronds droop.

Here's a still of that palm growing in semi shade of our garden..

20160923_114450.thumb.jpg.2bc2bb0d56ef15The same is the case with the palm that I gifted to a park near by.

Love,

Kris.
