My dypsis onilahensis is flowering for the first time. Will there be any chance of getting viable seed? Are they selve pollinating? Want to eventually try and growing this species from seed. I am amazed at how hardy (cold and hot) this species is.

it usually take a couple of flower cycles before you get a good number of viable seed with all the working parts inside.

I would try the sink test and the ones that pass try to germinate them.

happy germinating!

cheers,

Josh

I had one produce seed like crazy the first go around. Another one aborted it's first time, like Josh mentioned. With plenty of bees around, they are most definitely self pollinating.  Looks great!

Thanks Josh. I had a flower spathe earlier this year but it came off with the weight of the leave. :( We will see what happens. I look forward to growing this Palm from seed. I bought this one as a seedling and has grown great for me.
