Hey all,

A fellow Palmtalker generously gave me a Bauhinia galpinii earlier this year.

Was wondering if anyone on the forum has experience with this species.

Particularly are there any concerns with roots?  In terms of soil..is clay of any danger to the plant during wet SoCal winters?  Are the roots invasive and potentially harmful to hardscape irrigation PVC?

Thanks!

Plenty of heat, plenty of sun, good drainage. Well amended clay should be no problem.

Not aware of any root problems. They develop a big taproot, which helps them bounce back after a freeze.

I've got a bunch of them! (Did I give you one?)

Agree with Dave, pretty forgiving. As with most things here, mine has done better with some afternoon shade.

Yes you did DD and I thank you for it.  I have a cool spot carved out for it.  Planning to plant it near a path close to the house (hence the root questions) and train it to arch over the pathway.

It will get lots of afternoon sun...until my Alfies get too big.

They tend to spread sideways, but I've seen them trained as you propose.

Keep us apprized!

At least there's no thorns to worry about.

This year only have one branch of my pot-grown B. galpinii with blooms, but I'll take whatever I can get in this location! Outdoors year-round I've lost them in the past, so this one overwinters in the sunroom. Local carpenter bees love to cut out sections of the leaves on this plant, so that doesn't help its vigor overall.
