Wallichia densiflora - the latest palm acquisition.

One of the nurseries we favor is Wirts Point Nursery in Babson Park Florida.  It's owner is a plant geek with an affinity for palms and cycads.  He's slowly closing the business and selling his hoard of cool plants.  He's down to just a few things left and the for sale sign is up on the property.  I will miss it once he's finished up selling everything and really closes.  Yesterday we made one of our pilgrimages and acquired this little Wallichia densiflora.  It was the smallest he had, as some are gigantic, mature specimens with flowering stems.  This palm has beautiful silvery white undersides and grows to tremendous proportions.  It's supposed to be Hardy into the mid 20's (f), so we're gonna find out!  We will keep you informed.

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I am a Kayaker, Hiker, Bicyclist, and amateur Photographer that loves the outdoors.

Keith, yeah, they get pretty large. Luckily easy to control by cutting older and newer stems. Better, in my opinion, as a specimen plant where you can walk around it and keep control as a clump. No so messy looking. Leaves get nice and big and the white undersides attractive. The inflorescence look like alien invasion of the body snatcher pods. Pretty cool.

Keith, as above "Plus" when the stem/s that flowers then dies, cut it all out when its fully done its thing and "dead" to keep your  wallichia looking good.

They are an underused Palm imo and very attractive indeed.

All best with yours :greenthumb:    Pete
