Hey all,

Curious if anyone knows a reputable source, that will ship to California, for buying banana plants.  I'm thinking of trying to create a garden where you can meander through and snack along the way while admiring palms and other eye candy.

I am interested in some of varieties that just aren't available at places locally.  Like Gros Michel aka Big Mike as an example.   Appreciate the input.

I can't address where to get the varieties you have identified, but I went with what a neighbor has been growing for several years very successfully.  That provided the assurance that I would get something which handles California's cooler winters.  Unfortunately sometimes they flower late in the autumn, and the unripened fruit has to winter over, so that's definitely a consideration.  I'm using for temporary shade, and will likely uproot some of mine someday, and already am having to control the colony size they want to establish.  Goldfinger from Hondura's provides shade from late Western setting summer sun for my Burretiokentia hapala.

I was growing bananas in my garden for temporary shade, but my garden is too small and bananas grows too fast. In my garden the palms are the stars and a few months ago i was removing every big bananas. In this moment i only have the small species, Musa rubinea and Musa violacea.

But was pleasure eat my own bananas.

Dwarf cvs would be ideal , look for red Dakka , and Dwarf Horn Plantain and the Dwarf Ducasse ..

otherwise you need a jetpack to pick a fruit prop17.thumb.jpg.4ce35b3604cfea988c36871

Adam have you tried alohatropicals.com in Vista/Oceanside?  I don't see Gros Michel on the list right now but there are quite a few others.

You should try Encanto Farms Nursery.  http://encantofarms.com/  It is local and I think he has more than 60 different varieties.
