During the recent Biennial in Borneo, a few of us deciding to hike the "hike from hell" to see Areca dayung. It was a 7 hour walk round trip and this was the palm we walked to see. It was incredible!

Quite the fashion statement for a brain-melting hike, I'm sure ;^)

Wonderful little palm there, Jeff. Great that you were able to meet it up close and personal. Some amazing Bornean dwarf arecas appear go be sliding discretely into cultivation (like brachypoda and gurita) on our end. Is this one - er - captive yet? I mean, outside of Thailand?

Jeff, oh yes.....those jungle treks, and how soon the ordeal fades when you arrive at what you were searching for. 

Fantastic looking Areca appearing more like a Joey. Gotta love it.

Good call.  I remember you (if memory serves) lamenting not pushing on to see Dypsis pumila.

I'm sure it was worth the effort. What a great palm.

I recently returned from a jungle trek and 7 hours/day  would have been bliss.

Nothing to see like this. 

The guides were collecting food in the jungle to add to supplies.

Turned my wife off trekking for life.

If you had read the article in 1980 you could already see a similar photo (without Jeff, but another person) and be able to ID that palm: :P

Are those babies or is it a clustering Areca? Were they plentiful or was it the only one you saw?

"Dripped in sweat"...more like it! As far as I know, it's not in cultivation, but would not surprise me if a plant or two were in private collections. I was extremely grateful to make this hike in Lambir Hills, BUT was very much glad to finish! Lol.

Surprisingly, there were very few leeches, and most days we encounter none. And I think it was due to the dry season for the most part.

Ahh, you have a good memory. And on that particular hike up in Marojejy, it would have been much shorter and quicker. Anyway, this was a grueling, very hard hike and was glad to do it. And not to forget, our Aussie guides were the best! Thanks to David, Phillip and Rudy!

Absolutely! We saw some Licuala valida, L. collina, L. petioulata, L. bidentata.  Pinanga species included, P. lepidota, P. minuta, P. chiana, P. mirabalis. And for Areca species, A. furcate, A. dransfieldii, and A. insignis var. insignis. All these on the same trail that day. Pretty impressive list, huh?

Its a beauty Jeff and yes its been  in private collection in Oz for quite some time, certainly not here , but I ask those who also know to zip their mouths.

Wow Jeff, that had to be  great fun. Some day when my boys are older and on their own, Ill be able to go over and experience that unique part of the 

world.
