We are pollinating Syagrus Schizophylla with Syagrus R. Pollen. We will also be taking Syagrus Schizophylla pollen and pollinating Butia Odorata. A few photos to share.

Hello Erik, why of all things you cross these species? What sense does it make?

Marc Suhor. We have a grower that has asked for this cross. syagrus schizophylla x syagrus romanzoffiana. We are doing the Butia cross as well just because why throw the pollen away? Here is a photo of one of the larger hybrids of syagrus s x syagrus r.

One of my B X S schizophylla. Pic taken last Sept (1.5yrs in ground). Was neglected in a pot for several years. I'll see about getting an updated pic when I get home in a few weeks.

How old over all Paul? I thought it would be a slower grower. That has nice size to it.

It is slow, 5yrs + but... they had set back each year with spear pull every winter except the last two. I believe it's far enough along now to have a better chance.

I don't see much Syagrus in that.  Looks pure Butia to me.  Maybe schiz pollen is less "assertive?"

it just looks like a butia, and not a hybrid

Update , My supposed butia x schizophlla didn’t take this past winter to well. Low 20’s and heavy frost about did it in. Spear pulled and I assumed it was a goner. For reference various mule palms near by burned, but no spear pulls. Here’s a recent pic.
