Hello,

I recently bought some seedlings labeled "palm surprise":floor: ... the labels had gone missing and the seller couldn't tell me what they were. I checked their stock list in order to identify potential candidates:

Veitchi joannis

Ptychosperma elegans

Pinanga khuli

Dyspsis pembana

Arenga engleri

Arenga tremula

Areca triendra

Archontophoenix alexandrea

Archontophoenix cunninghamiana

Areca catechu

There are three palms in all. I suspect that palm 2 is Veitchi joannis, and palm 3 is Arenga tremula because the engleri he sells are a lot bigger according to the stock list. Pics below.

Thank you very much in advance!

cheers,

Welcome on Palmtalk, Bruno,

I am sorry but I would say other names:
seedling 1 reminds me some Chamaedorea,
seedling 3 could be V. joannis with juvenile leaves and not A. tremula.
I understand it doesn't help.
Hopefully other Palmtalk members (like a german expert showing all eophylles he can :)) will help.

I tend to agree with doranakandawatta that seedling 3 is in all likelihood V. joannis. As to seedling 2 do you think it's Archontophoenix alexandrea or cunninghamiana?

Seedling 2 looks more like Archontophoenix cunninghamiana

Yes, I think you're right. I checked the leaflet underside and they are covered with ramenta. Thank you all, three for three.

Cheers.

Hello Bruno!!!

I love this new concept "surprise palm":floor:.

Be careful, may be you will plant a Jubaea in a Chamaedorea place:P

Yes, a common mistake, since they pretty much look the same, and that "surprise" could take a painfully long time to discover .
