The white paint is used to deter ants from crawling up the trees and cultivating aphids and such. The lime mix burns their feet.

Here's a pic I found while perusing the web...  I believe it clearly shows these folks in Barbados painted the trees for purely aesthetic reasons...  I still vote there is no good reason for this...
