Thank you for sharing! very nice

Wow they are purple or deep plum color. Very fascinating color difference! Even the inside of the spathe. Thanks for all the pics. Did you taste the fruit and if so did it have a different flavor?

What's the temperature range where those are growing? Wondering if the color variation has anything to do with colder weather.

Butia purpurascens?

In the region where the palms were found the only Butia that can occur is Capitata , but the fruits are very different and the juice is reddish remembering the color of acerola fruit. The altitude is approximately 1100m altitude ,it is cold but there is no frost.

Thanks for the very good photos of this different Butia with dark purple fruit.  How does it taste?  Sweet or not?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Are these fruits tastier than regular odorata type?

Posted

The seeds and dwarf like habit look like purpuracens. Is this area far from its natural habitat?

Then you could make a red wine or at least a rose from the fruit. I'm intrigued now. Butia odorata makes a great white wine.

Millbrook, "Kinjarling" Noongar word meaning "Place of Rain", Rainbow Coast, Western Australia 35S. Warm temperate. Csb Koeppen Climate classification. Cool nights all year round.

the purple color is anthocyanins which turn red when they are exposed to an acidic environment but are purple when slightly alkaline.  Anthocyanins can give rise to lots of color in very small quantities.  Blue berries are blue due to anthocyanins and its typically less than 1% that does it.  they exist in the outer tissue (skin) layer.  Its not unusual to have purple or reddish stems, it can be a response to the surrounding environment.   My bismarckia responded this way to cold when it was a seedling.  Seedings of some species push anthocyanins when cold and also in defense to an insect attack.  I have never heard of fruits turning in response to cold or insect attack, just leaves and stems.  Since butias naturally hybridize, could it be that a purpurcens hybrid has survived the area?

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Best seeds from what I have seen! Planted my seeds 01/08/2025 and already germinating. These are Sabal Cherokee seeds.
