My small Areca macrocalyx var. Marie and a larger Carpoxylon have recently started showing brown spots on some of the older fronds. What could be the cause of this and how can it be treated?

Not so sure about these. Could be several causes: fungal infection, sunburn, cold damage. Areca macrocalyx is extremely cold sensitive.

Sucking insects.  You will have to spray but there are safe options like DE and Neem oil.  I find these tend to be a problem with plants that are either stressed or don't get much rain and weather on the leaves.    Good luck.
