I knew about this species only from what I saw on Palmpedia, with nice pictures of BGL mature and fruiting plants.

So I planted here and there few seedlings and I have been so happy to discover this colorful trunk after I removed an old leaf.

So much looking forward :

1. to seeing my plants growing

2. before that, to enjoying photos Palmtalkers will post (from some hawaiian gardens or from Australia ????)

This is my P. speciosa. Its about 3m tall and has flowered a few times without producing seeds. I wish I had a small grove of these instead of the single plant I currently have.

I saw the suggestion of photographs from Hawaii, and here are three pics. These are from seeds purchased in April 2008. The four palms were planted, probably from 1-gal pots,.in July 2013. One of the original five died for unknown reasons. I neglected to do something for scale, but these are 15 to 20 feet tall (4.5 to 6 meters).

The location is a low spot where a lot of trees from the clearing of my lot were buried. It turns out to be an amazingly fertile spot for planting palms, and I wish I had used it for some harder to grow and scarcer palms. It receives some shading during midday during the winter months, but no shading during the summer.

I wish this was mine, but it is up at Lyon Arboretum in Manoa, I've never had any success here with them. It must be too dry, even

with daily irrigation.
