Yesterday I found myself on my own and while driving about I passed a local independent plant nursery that has random opening hours. To my delight it was open my car just drove itself into the carpark no idea how that happened. Anyway this nursery is run by an older couple and the husband has an interest in palms. Without any distraction  being hurried by my family I was able to have a proper browse through their shade house. They have a fantastic range of palms that aren't usually offered by the mainstream nurseries although much of the stock is small as it mostly grown by seed on site.

I found this nice sized Rhopalostylis baueri I just couldn't leave without it.

Although I have a few Dypsis baronii seedlings I grabbed this slightly bigger one, I have a place in my front garden for a baronii

I spotted this Beccariophoenix madagascariensis I don't have one so had to have it too

Finally once I thought collected enough for one day I got into a conversation with the owner who mentioned he'd sprouted some Dypsis pembana that he was going to put out in the sale area in a few weeks time, somehow I twisted his arm and he picked one out for me. It's only a seedling but I don't mind.20170204_142816.thumb.jpg.f8f7694a65e60e

The Laccospadix could be ten years old maybe older. There are some tall Chamaedorea metalica too (sorry I didn't take a pic of those). The nursery owner talks about the palms as if they were his children he has sold a few of those since my last visit. I love his nursery because it is so different to mainstream devoid of glossy advertising, plants seemingly placed ad-hoc, the displays actually force you to look. It is so nice to visit a plant nursey where you can't see everything from the entrance.

Yes, i was two days ago in Viveralia. I am working in a gardening company and every years i must go to viveralia.

But Viveralia is a miting of the big Nurserys of Spain and not a place to buy palms. But you can buy palms in the Palmania stand.

The problem is i have every interesting palms from Palmania.

And the other nurserys only have cold hardy palms:(

Great additions to your collection Pip...

Pip,

what you described is the absolute dream of mine. Driving around on our island and finding a remote nursery no one

ever seriously noticed with lot of palm treasures, pulling my credit card and telling the owner: "Don't interrupt me until

the limit is reached..."

All the best to you with your new plants -

best regard

Nice to see something different and not your usual mainstream nursery grown stuff. Also takes the hard work out of getting seedling up and running.

great selection of palm and its nice when you find a small quirky interdependently run Nursery  that has a great range of plants. The Rhopalostylis baueri is a great addition mine is huge now and not far away from trunking. They need alot of shade when small especially in the hot Adelaide sun.

Good find pip.

One day I want to run a similar style nursery. I've got my eye on a 64m2 professionally made tunnel house.

Keep in contact with those guys and go back and buy that kentiopsis. :D

Thanks Troy. I do have another Rhopalostylis baueri purchased from the same place but growing out in the open rather than in the shade house so it is a little bet up. I have it in a morning sun position. Totally agree Adelaide's hot summer sun does hammer them. ABG has a really nice specimen near the North Terrace entrance it is very close to trunking and is under the canopy of large trees.

I would have grabbed the Kentiopsis but I want to get some more shade established. I have about 10 seedlings in my own shade house so by the time I get the shade they should be large enough to plant out. Oh dear I'm being rational!

Hahahahahahaha I'm just being sneaky my partner won't notice a small number of palms being added to my container ranch. I then plant by stealth once I've decided where the particular palm needs to go.
