Boy, thats a very attractive Syagrus. I tried these seedlings a number of years back; I beieve them to be one of the most cold sensitive Syagrus out there. Which means I'm no longer growing any.

 I agree Brett this is one that we cannot grow here in California. I wish we could because they're gorgeous

I see by the sign this palm, Syagrus vermicularis, called 'Pati' locally.  Isn't Syagrus botryophora also called 'Pati"?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

 

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).  

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

3 Syagrus has the same popular name :  botryophora ,cocoides and vermicularis ..Word of indigenous origin .

I must concur; for me, it's been Syagrus "muerte-ensis". Goes like gangbusters, in the greenhouse, though, which is why I got some a while back. "Take us home you fool!" they said, and I did. Same for S. ruschiana. The local southern California name for them is "Croaky" or "Carky."

Oleracea is much easier and those black trunks are gorgeous. (Mardy Darian had some at his late place.)

Got some of these coming up that I picked up a couple months ago down in Miami. A nice looking syagrus In mo what was interesting was listening to Dr. Larry Noblick referring to it as the ramon noodle palm
