Ah! Now I know what is a needle palm, thanks :) ( we have other needle palms in Sri Lanka, for example our Katu Kithul: Oncosperma fasciculatum.)

I wonder why most native palms of the Southeastern United States grow so slow?

I would imagine it's an adaptation to our "sudden freezes."  Palms in active growth are more susceptible to cold.
