I can't remember but Licuala elegans is not the actual botanic name of the species, is this Licuala peltata 'Sumawongii'?

Anyway, very beautiful picture , thanks.

Yes that is right but here in Australia it is always sold as Licuala elegans....... When you mention L. peltata 'Sumawongii' many people just have no idea as to what you are talking about.

it's why Palmtalk forum can help, I was not sure... and IPS gives scientific basis.

This species deserves the name "elegant"
I planted a group in Doranakanda gardens, looking forwrard to seeing them growing.

Very nice specimen, it is always nice to see species growing well in their country of origin.

Andrew is correct, the name is Licuala peltata var. sumawongii. It has become one of the most popular Licuala species here in S. Florida, not just for its appearance and faster rate of growth, but also for its cold tolerance.

The naming confusion with L. elegans has been ongoing for a long time. True L. elegans is native to Sumatra and hasn't been seen much since it was described and named in 1838.

Ryan, do you know of any photos of the true L. elegans?

Not that I have seen. There is an old debate that when the palm was described by Blume in his compendium Rumphia, that certain parts of the description were lacking details and no herbarium specimens were collected. It might have been a 'lightly' described species, and there hasn't been much effort to find the source palm again.
